Dumpy B

Updated: Feb 10, 2022

Built in late 1942 as a back up communications facility for the Combined HQ under Dover Castle. This bunker would’ve been used for joint operations by the Army, Navy and RAF and would possibly have been used as a Reserve Central Command HQ if the HQ at Dover Castle had fallen.

The station housed wireless communications equipment, staff accommodation and a generator that would have powered the lighting, ventilation and equipment.

One interesting feature of the bunker is it’s ventilation towers, these have moveable eyeball like nozzles that are similar in design to the ventilation towers within the combined HQ at Dover Castle. The size of the ventilation towers and ducting was needed to help cool the machinery being used within the bunker.

The Bunker has two entrances. The first was lined with a staircase, either side of the staircase were metal rails that enabled heavy equipment to be taken in and out of the bunker. The second entrance was unlined and considered the emergency exit.
